This place is legit in every way. I have seen people comment on the ambience and the decor but they forget to realize it is a dive bar. An awesome dive bar with the best burgers in San Diego. They are simple, fresh ingredients and amazing service. Everyone that works there is always happy to help you and they are always excited about working. Nick is amazing, the bartender. It was only him and one cook but they handled everybody like professionals. Nick was courteous, patient and checked up on us multiple times..he also made me the best cocktail I've ever had!! You have to check this hidden gem out.

We didn't know about the name change so got scared for a sec as we had invited folks to come join us at our favorite hamburger place after our marriage ceremony yesterday. I was happy to see Doods great food there has not changed.. We like the dive-y bar thing. We'd met in a small dive neighbor bar that's now closed, so we feel a bit at home here. I like the small seating changes they made which acutally accomodated our group nicely. They took care of all of us well and I think all our guests enjoyed themselves. Great atmosphere, music, burger, fries and beer! They are now open 7 days a week so even better!! Thank you guys for making our special day perfect!

Very excited for the future of the new Balboa Bar & Grill ...I've been coming to Doods Foods for years now, and I've gotten to know Tommy, the head chef and owner - not only is his menu delicious, but he is also a truly genuine person - actually, his entire staff is top notch ...come here hungry and leave fully satisfied ...thank you Balboa!!! See you this weekend!!!

I went in with a friend that found this place on here. We like to go for food and a beer after throwing a round of disc golf..... usually a burger and a pint or two of a good craft beer. I'm really surprised that this place is rated so well. The only good thing I can say about this place is the bartender was really friendly..... 1. Total dive that you can tell many people have wasted their life in here. Dirty, smelly, cheap sound system. 2. Burger was waaaay over cooked. I asked for medium and it wasn't even close. And so much grease ran out, not dripped, I had to put a stack of napkins on my plate to soak it up. 3. The only cheese is American cheese??? Who eats that crap? 4. Not even a mediocre selection of beers. 5. Fries were so over cooked too that I only ate a couple to try them. If you want to waste your time more power to you. I can't see why anyone in their right mind would frequent this place with SO many other better options..... these good reviews have to be planted.

My husband and I stopped in for a burger and a beer over the weekend. Both were exceptional. The burger was so delicious i could have eaten two and my husband agreed. All of the staff was very friendly. Will definitely return next time we are in town.

It was a chilly, rainy Friday and we were in search of a tiny bar that poured a nice pint and served up a good burger. Two of our group had been here before and said, "Just you wait ... ". I trusted their judgment. And Boy Howdy was I glad I did! This joint is excellent! Some have described it as a dive. I can't agree with that. There is a warm and welcoming atmosphere with a bare-bones feeling, yes, but not a 'dive-bar' at all. The crowd was sprightly and hip and we were lucky to find a table for four. You place your order with the bartender, get your drink and the food arrives freshly made (I watched the chef/cook work and he's very efficient). I had the Balboa Burger (the most basic of the many choices) and it was perfect. I also ordered a small order of garlic fries and they were delicious and very garlicky. I've had a lot of burgers around this town and this has nudged itself into my favorite! Really! My table-mates agreed and we'll be back before long. Oh, and another plus ... they were streaming a 1973 Glenn Ford western on the flat screen and playing Steppenwolf & Parliament on the juke box. As a final comment, the guys running this joint are very friendly and accommodating. My thanks to them!

Looking for great burgers and beer in SD? Not only is their name pretty cool, but Doods' will definitely satisfy your cravings. I stumbled upon this little gem by accident driving by 5th Avenue and I'm really glad I did. Since the first time, I've been coming back here often. It's become my favorite burger place in the SD area. They have a great variety of burgers - especially the Original stacked with the perfect amount of everything. The thing I really like about Doods' is that their burgers aren't overly greasy. I hate greasy food!

This place deserves more attention and love. Stopped by this place when we were visiting the museums and the zoo, and it's in a very convenient location with plenty of parking during the week days.BF ordered the bbq, and he said it was good. I ordered the house special balboa burger, and I guarantee you this is the best burger I have ever had - and I am a burger fan so I try out all different places. Garlic fries is too garlicy and bit bitter so I wouldnt recommend ordering it. Just the regular fries would be very satisfying. I also ordered a salad, but I was too full so I only had a few bites and it's just a salad. However, the server is very nice and if you order the right items, it will be a great experience. I wish I am eating a Balboa burger as I'm writing this review - enough said. Go get yourself a burger! PS I have high standards - I don't just give out 5 star reviews easily. You can look at my review distributions since I want to be fair and help those 5 star businesses flourish and stand out from the mediocre ones and make the bad ones go extinct. I write my reviews based on price, customer service/ experience, value (what you pay vs what you get) and last but not least taste or deliver what they are supposed to deliver.

I can proudly say that I (me and my bf) discovered this little gem back when it was Doods. Ever since we walked in to this amazing little spot off 5th we fell in love. The staff is top notch and always ready to make your stay here exceptional. The food is phenomenal! I usually go for the Burgito, salsa on the side and I add bacon, which is basically a burger with fries and avocado. Their burgers aware great and reasonably priced for the quality. Another thing to look forward to when coming here is the live music, they have bands come out so if you're into live music check out their schedule. Great place I highly recommend to anyone exploring the rich burger culture in San Diego.

I don't normally do my drinking in 92101, but my friend's band had a gig here, so I decided to go watch them. First off, I hate, no, I despise a cover charge. Given that I'd heard Balboa described as a dive bar, I was a little surprised that they had a $5 cover this night. They had two live bands, so maybe that's they're justification? I also justified it by reasoning that we're not far from the Gaslamp, where damn near every club has a cover. The place definitely has a no-frills vibe. A long bar on the left side, maybe seating for a dozen. Maybe eight tables on the right, seating four each. The stage and restrooms in the back. They had food, which has great reviews, but the service was spotty. I had one of their burgers - it was about average. Their garlic fries were definitely not better than average. The place looks like a dive, smells like a dive, but charges like we're overlooking the beach in PB. They had about six beers on tap, charging $6 or $7 each. Yikes! (Oh, and the a la carte burgers were $8+.) I guess they must have a high rent bill? There's plenty of other dives I'd rather spend my money at. I won't be back...unless the band is.

I know you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover but let's face it, it's in our nature to do so. I don't care what anybody says, you can't transcend your nature. Our survival is based upon making instant judgments to trigger a "flight or fight" reaction, that's just how it works. Naturally, we can apply the same principal to dining/drinking establishments in which we spend our money. With all that said, I seriously wouldn't give Balboa Bar & Grill a second thought if I were just strolling by since it literally looks like a hole in the wall. Even inside it appears slightly divey, nothing that really wows you or stands out as anything other than average. Other than a peek of the kitchen in the corner, I'd almost ask myself, "Wait, they serve food here?" Once we move past the judging a book by its cover thing, Balboa Bar & Grill defies those initial instincts once you see a food menu. Balboa has Burgers, sandwiches and salads but I heard that their burger was where it's at. Since I'm a burger fiend, that's what I had to have. Taking the advice of a friend, I went with the Balboa Burger, added a fried egg, then ordered a side of fries and for kicks I got a pint of Port Brewing's Mongo. It all came out to $15. Not bad at all. Anyway, so how was the burger? Wowza! This little burger packs one hell of a punch! I'm not sure what they do to this thing but somewhere between that bolillo roll, the beef patty, lettuce, tomato, onions, American cheese, house aoli, and added egg create a powerhouse of flavor that I'm simply not used to having when I get a burger somewhere, let alone a bar/pub! I don't know if it's the best burger I've ever had but it has definitely blurred the lines and is definitely one of the best in recent memory. I don't know what it is but it's just a sleeper. Maybe it's just because I was a skeptic due to it only being 1/3 pound and I pretty much just stick to making my own...but... I was extremely impressed. The burger is definitely where it's at here. Okay, burger induced drooling aside, this place has an okay beer menu. Like I said earlier, they had Port's Mongo which is always a good go to IIPA and a couple other ones that were decent but nothing that really holds a flame to your "beer bars". However, with one or two that are solid choices for the beer snob and the fact that their food and service are good and their burger is killer, I'm going to go ahead and give them a pass. Honestly, I need to make it back here again. Even if it's just for a burger, it will be worth it but I'm sure that I won't just stop at that.

Man oh man you wouldn't know it but their burgers are out of this world! This place seems more like a bar when you enter but they are licensed as a restaurant so that worked in our favor because we were able to stop in for dinner with our little boy. It was a long day after a legoland so my husband and I were snooping around for some happy hour specials. Just so happens that this place offers it. The usual- well drinks and beers on tap for $5 but also their burgers. We ordered 3 of the Balboa burgers and a large order of garlic fries and it was Delish!! No lie! I am not usually a burger person but this one would probably convert me to being one. The burger meat was juicy and flavorful! The garlic fries were tasty as well. Stop by, have a drink but don't leave until you've ordered their burger and garlic fries!

I don't normally eat burgers but on this strange cool night we decided to hit this hidden gem up because a friend referred us to this place. He said they have the best burgers in San Diego. We hit this spot up and the environment is so laid back and friendly. They give you a menu and when you ready to order you go up to the bar and place your order. I ordered the pastrami burger and my husband ordered the BBQ bacon cheeseburger. No lies here when I say that burger was the best burger I have ever had. The pastrami was crispy and juicy, the hamburger patty was juicy, the bun was nice and soft. It was soooo good! I can definitely say you will get a burger orgasm when you eat one of their burgers. The garlic fries were ok and the drinks were alright but if you looking for a good burger this is the spot!

I have spent the past year and a half being dragged across this city by a fellow yelper on the hunt for the best burger. I accepted the quest, ordering burgers here and there, but mostly finding other things on menus that tickled my fancy more. And then there was the Balboa Burger. Warm crisp bun, juicy meat, fresh lettuce and tomato, and a creamy spread... I can't quite tell you why, but this is MY favorite burger in San Diego. Balboa Bar & Grill could be easily missed if you weren't looking for it..even with its stunning black and white mural of the Cabrillo Bridge. I love all the small vintage prints of local spots and monuments the surround the bar. It's a small space, the bartenders are super friendly, and I know they have a bunch of local artists playing (mostly $5 cover on those nights). One evening we came to grab dinner to go and a musical trio was doing a piece with a tap dancer. Great mash-up to happen in to! You guys have to try this hush hush local spot. You will not be sorry!

First off....lemme just say I love burgers. Rarely in life do you come across the perfect burger, it's kinda like a unicorn. But this burger right here....THIS BURGER RIGHT HERE!!! I had to wait until my second time coming here to review, partially because of the food coma it brought on and partially because if it's good the second time it's really good lol. The second time wasn't good though, it was better. Those garlic fries, the bread they use, the juicy Patty. We even drive the car there to be fat and just let the food marinate. I will come here every single time I'm in San Diego.

Formerly known as Doods Foods. Even with a change in name, the feel and exceptional services of this place remains the same. I dropped in on a hungry Sunday afternoon. Our server was quite the nice fellow. I had showed him what I had on my previous visit and they said the food remained the same with different names. I was not disappointed! Garlic fries were on point and my burger was heavenly. I can't tell you how good it was, you'd have to go try the burgers for yourself! Truly one of the best kept secret of San Diego. I shall return, please keep the quality of food and your exceptional service the same!

First time here. I've seen so many of my friends commenting on this place and I just happened to be a block away so I figured why not. Easy to find and right on a main street with plenty of parking (metered) nearby. Walked inside and it's quite dark but typical for the type of bar it is. I was greeted right away by one of the bartenders (and I think part owner). I was looking at the menu and he asked if he could help me, but not so much in helpful tone but more of a you're in the wrong place tone. I told him I wanted to get a burger and he invited me in. There is a bar with maybe 10 seats and a few tables. I was going to take a table when someone invited me to have their seat at the bar as they were leaving. I ordered The Classic burger with a beer. I took a seat at the bar and enjoyed a cold Ale Smith. It wasn't long before my burger was delivered and it looked amazing. Too bad it didn't taste amazing. I was asked how I wanted my burger cooked and I told them medium is fine. Unfortunately medium here is like medium well to well done. The burger didn't look that cooked when they brought it out, but after biting into it I soon discovered it was cooked way past medium. It comes on a fresh soft bun with lettuce, tomato and onion. Again, unfortunately they grill the onion and it has lost most of it's flavor. I prefer raw onion on my burger and the menu says nothing about grilled onions. Overall, good burger but so many other places I would go to first before coming here. It was over cooked and I'm not at all a fan of grilled onions. For sides they only offer fries or garlic fries but most burger places I know will also offer onion rings. I would recommend serving the yellow chili peppers or having them available. Many other burger places are starting to offer these and I've found they really bring out the flavor of the burger. And I didn't get a very friendly feeling from the bartender when I first came in and tried to engage in small talk after I sat down but he seemed to prefer talking to his locals than someone new. Again, many other great burger places in the near vicinity and I would recommend them if you are craving a truly good burger. Disappointed this didn't live up to the reputation.

I came here with a group to support a great local business during happy hour. Their balboa burger is OUT OF THIS WORLD. I'm not a burger fan by any stretch, but these guys work some magic mojo in the back of that kitchen to make this burger. The bun was fresh and fluffy, but didn't turn soggy with the lettuce, tomato, and fat from the burger. I'm pretty sure toasting of the bun helps, but the spread that they use acts as a barrier to keeping your burger from melting into a mushy bun. Cocktails are spirit forward (hint: that means they pour generously) but well balanced. They have a stage here, and I presume that's because they have open mic night/bands/etc going on here.

CITY BEAT BURGER WEEK #2 The $5 (reg $7.75) Burger Week special Balboa Burger looks simple, but was amazingly meaty, tasty and delicious due to the secret Zesty House Aoili, which went great with the $3 garlic fries. I'll definitely come back and pay full price. FYI: The prices here are just like in Europe, VAT style(aka Value Added Tax), in which the price on the menu already has the tax built in. So thats an immediate 8% discount! Maybe I'm a cheapass, but when was the last time my boss gave me an 8% raise?

Isabelle, a cute, petite, fierce woman who lived in my building in Washington, DC, was a saucier in the French Embassy's kitchen. She was also my girlfriend. I did alright in the 80's. One evening, in response to her demand, "... find for me a real American 'amboogare..." I took Isabelle to Hamburger Hamlet, whose menu described no fewer than thirty variations on the iconic sandwich. Surveying the list, my friend grumbled in French that Americans were "gloutons." She asked me which of the thirty Hamlet burgers was the best one, the real American one. And because women love it when you lecture them, I said these things: "Hamburgers are the perfect reflection of the American personality; the perfect burger is perfected by the individual eating it; and as no two people are the same, there's no "right" way to prepare or dress a burger." Then I learned the French word for "bullshit." Isabelle was certain that I knew the answer and was holding out on her. I sort of understood. The French have only recently begun to think for themselves in the kitchen, and at the time, her experience would have taught Isabelle that there was a "right" way to prepare iconic dishes - that is, the only ones that mattered - and so she'd have assumed that the burger, an American icon, had a perfect, practical form. It's a shame that happened there and then. Today, at least in San Diego, the question is easy to answer: the most genuine American hamburger in town is made at Balboa Bar and Grill. In their signature Balboa Burger, BB&G - a combination of the former Tin Can Bar and Dood's Foods - has a wonderful thing, largely because they don't screw with it. Owner/partner/all-around nice guy Tom Logsdon and his staff use good meat, a slightly fatty 70/30 that produces thick, juicy, beefy patties, and they dress the burger in classic style: lettuce, onion, American cheese if you want, and the best, most consistently ripe and flavorful Roma tomatoes I've seen in town. Granted, the burger includes a non-standard garlic aioli, but it's good, and to avoid trouble, I'd have lied to Isabelle and said garlic aioli is an old American custom. Same goes for the buttered, grilled, custom-made bolillo with which the fellows embrace their dripping, rich and savory bundle of burger joy. All-American. The Bar's excellent French fries would be unfamiliar to the French. Made from Kennebec potatoes and dusted with a bit of spice, their fries are firm, crisp and fluffy with a slight nutty flavor that the French can't duplicate. USA! USA! What I like about BB&G's menu is that it's short: just the fries, three non-burger choices, and six burger variants to which you can mix, match, add or subtract toppings at will, which is an American tradition, too. I like an over-medium egg on mine, for the egg-yolk gravy, but I'm not from here. BB&G recently replaced bottled beer with four drafts, rotating every few weeks through several local and in-state craft brewers. Add to that a full bar - Tom makes a decent Old Fashioned, the classic accompaniment to any burger - and you've got lunch or dinner, in that most American of settings: the corner bar.

Simplicity is where it's at! Balboa is doing a great job keeping it simple and putting out a great burger. I was searching for a place close to home that was participating in the City beat Burger week and ended up here. My GF and I walked into this small narrow bar (similar to Rockys) and found a tight spot at the bar. Ordered up the Balboa burger because that's what was on special. $5 bucks is hard to beat for a 1/3 pound burger. Burger came out quick, guys behind the bar were friendly and checked in on us a couple times to see how we were doing. The Balboa burger was great! 1/3 pound patty cooked medium. Fresh tomatoes and onions with American cheese. What really made the burger stand out was the bolillo roll and the zesty house aoli. The roll was moist and had a nice texture to it. I can only describe it as a fresh bagel. Really good roll. The zesty aoli was exactly that "zesty" and was the perfect condiment. No need to add ketchup or mustard. The bar itself is small, rustic and simple. Just the way I like it!

Real talk: I really, truly appreciate the Balboa burger here. I can't believe I never visited this place when the kitchen was known as Doods Foods (probably because I couldn't personally justify going to a "Doods" place, ha). Even though the business has changed its name, apparently the food has stayed the same and I'm glad it has! I got word of the (new) restaurant because of the San Diego CityBeat $5 Burger Week list. Out of the three places/burgers I tried, Balboa B&G was my favorite. I got my $5 burger to go. It didn't look as pretty and perked up as those in the dine-in photos, but wow, was it a great burger with an amazing flavor--almost umami-like. I could easily list Balboa Bar & Grill as one of my top picks for best burger joint in San Diego. If not for the lovely Balboa Park mural art outside on the entrance, I would miss it. Along with the remodeled speakeasy/dive/live music atmosphere of the small space, I'll most likely come back for a drink pairing with that Balboa burger. Soon.

These guys are serious about their burgers. No really, the burgers here are on the upper echelon of burgers for the San Diego area. Yes, there are not well know, located in the old Tin Can Bar of what use to be Dood's Food. Keeping the same burger recipes and adding a little of their own touch, has resulted with outstanding results. I came in during $5 burger week and ordered the The Balboa Burger with crispy Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, American Cheese, Zesty House Aoli on a locally baked Bolillo Roll, and for my personal touch, I added sliced avocados for $1.50 more, all to be washed down with refreshing Pilser. The burger was prepared a perfect medium rare with a great exterior seer, very juicy center, and most importantly it provided that great beef flavor that lingers in the mouth. Combined with the creamy avocado, fresh produce, and melted all American Cheese, this burger was a great experience. The toasted bolillo roll was quite impressive, not only because the great buttery toast it had, but the bread itself was moist with a mild grainy texture that help up well the the burger's ingredients. To top things off, zesty house aoili was bliss and had a mild chipotle roasted flavor. I usually never have mayo on my burgers, but this one was no doubt an exception. Service was very down to earth and even the chef came out for some banter. Great place with even better burgers.

Taste- #### Ambiance- ## Service- #### Parking- ## The Balboa burger: hey girl, you got a man? Me: HAHAHAHAHA!!!! The Balboa burger: I'm not messing around. No, that burger is for-real not messing around. Came in for SD burger week and got a tutorial of how to eat my burger. Nick says you have to make sure to put the knife through the second half to keep it together while you are still working on your first half. Good tip. I was pleasantly surprised by how a couple of guys in the tiny bar can churn out such a good burger. Perfectly grilled on the outside, still a tiny bit of pink on the inside, topped with lettuce, tomato, the special aioli sauce and I added bacon and avocado to mine. Fries were cooked perfect with a sprinkling of paprika. Yummy, yum yum it was. Though the burger was really good, I'm not sure I would come by with a group of friends due to the spacing of the bar, I can't imagine this place seating more than 20 people? Need to mention I got excellent customer service from Nick the bartender, very attentive and busy as a bee. The only thing I noticed was something I couldn't identify on the bill. (Glad Chun P posted his bill so I can compare) Got 3 Balboa burgers and upgraded all three to have bacon and avocado, but instead of $1.39 I was charged $2.78 for both upgrades for one of the burgers. (see pic) Brought this up to Nick and he said it was "probably a tax", I don't think so, because I see where the tax was added. Sure it was just $2.80, but I would like my itemized receipt to be accurate, especially since I was upsold on the toppings. Other than that no complaints about this establishment.

Friendly staff and fresh burgers. I was referred by a friend who brought the menu to me. If he brought a menu and insisted in trying it out. That means I have to go and eat there. I wasn't disappointed the burgers were moist and juicy. It was warm and the Aoli sauce was amazing. The garlic fries was Orignal and tasty but it could have been a little more crispy. I tried the Balboa Burger. Can't go wrong with that one. And thanks to Tom for giving me half of his pastrami burger.

Staff is incredibly welcoming and friendly! This place is by far my favorite in San Diego since arriving a few days ago. My boyfriend and I both ordered the balboa burger and split the side portion of garlic friends. The burger is literal heaven in your mouth. No other burger will ever compare to the juicy amazing flavors. The garlic fries with pretty bangin too. P.S. The burgers are $5 during happy hour 4pm-6pm. EAT HERE!!!

So I finally made it down to the Balboa Bar & Grill, thanks to Omar S. Wow am I happy I did! This place is truly unassuming and humble, but man are they hiding the best burgers I've ever had. I grabbed a seat at the bar and was introduced to Tom, who was very friendly and a perfect host. He also made me an excellent old fashioned. I did note that there are other items on the menu here, like chicken and salads, but get real, this place is known for their burgers and that's what I came here for! I ordered the Balboa burger just the way it's made along with an order of their fries. When it came it was a thing of beauty; it had a knife buried in the center, obviously Tom knew I'd need to cut that huge baby up to eat it. They have bolillo buns especially made for them, and they're just perfect for the juicy 70/30 meat that's seasoned and grilled to perfection. And those buns, oh wow, they buttered them up and then slathered on that zesty house made aioli. My mouth is watering just remembering the taste combination. And the absolute perfection of the Roma tomatoes from Speciality Produce, so ripe and juicy. Add on a little onion, romaine lettuce, and cheese and you've got the best burger in town! Not to be forgotten were the fries. They cut and blanch their fries here. They're twice cooked Kennebec potatoes. They're dusted with a really tasty seasoning that gives them a nice little kick. Tom checked to make sure that I was ok with it when I ordered since it was my first time in. He also asked if I wanted a side of the aioli sauce for dipping with my fries, of course I took him up on that! The fries are crispy and and that garlicky aioli was a great match for them, yum. Besides, I need all the extra fat I can get. This is a smaller place, Tom was saying that they can only grill 8 burgers at a time. There is no freezer on the premises. That's right, everything here is fresh. We also got to meet Mike, who was working hard in the kitchen to make our delicious lunch. It must be pretty hopping here though because when Omar asked, Tom said that they go through around 700 pounds of meat a week. That's a lot of burgers. I'll definitely be back for more, order a few extra pounds, Tom!

2 burgers and a side of garlic fries for only $13! An amazing special during $5 burger week. The Balboa Burger was full of juiciness from the medium rare beef patty on a perfectly buttered and crisp bolillo roll. Damn, it was so goodddd. The boyfriend was obsessed with the roll. I requested for the house aioli on the side. Best part? I didn't even need to add it because the burger was so flavorful already. I did not expect such a gourmet yet street style burger from this joint. It highly EXCEEDED my expectations. Can't decide if it's better than Slaters 50/50 (which I also love) or just as good but hands down the best burger I've ever paid $5 for. Originally cost was ~$7 which is still worth it! The small portion of the garlic fries were only $3. It was seasoned so well too with fresh chopped garlic and cajun seasoning. Portion size was perfect for 2 people. Sweeeet! You order the food at the bar and then find a seating. The server will bring your food to the table. The vibe is chill. It's your basic classic American small sized bar so don't expect anything fancy.

This place is fantastic! The garlic fries and the burgito is unbelievable. The staff are super friendly and attentive. There isn't a draft selection but the mixed drinks are delicious. Definitely give this place a try and support local business!

Where would I be if not for Yelp? I definitely would of never heard of or been to the Balboa Bar & Grill. But alas, in today's society we have the means of social media and apps that helps us find gems just like this. Long live Yelp! On 5th avenue in Banker's Hill is a place that cranks out great hamburgers, drinks and good times. Not a huge place. Probably holding around 30 people tops. So at peak times; I am thinking maybe Friday and Saturday nights like most places. I am imagining it being nearly impossible to find a seat. Coming in on a Saturday afternoon it was nearly packed. It was the two of us and there weren't any immediate places to sit together. It did only take a few minutes until other patrons left. So it's all about timing in this place. I could see maybe reconfiguring things to accommodate more people but it might hurt part of the charm. They definitely have that neighborhood bar type feel that I love so much. Having a full bar and four or five top select beers on tap. There isn't someone going around taking your order. You need to order food and drinks at the bar. A growing trend in a lot bars that serve good food that I have frequented in the last three years. They do however bring the food to you. As far as the service. The bartenders their are tops. Friendly, engaging and on top of their game. I went from beer to shots of Fireball to a Michelada. Definitely left with a full stomach and a nice buzz. Side note- gave my keys to the wife so she could drive home. No need to drink and drive ever. Talking about a full stomach again. The star of the show is the burgers. Definitely one of the best burgers I have ever eaten. Having the Classic burger. The burger starts with a tall bun with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mustard and a real good meat pattie. Nothing complicated here but attaining hamburger perfection. The garlic fries were a great compliment. Balboa Bar & Grill is in my book just awesome. Everything you want in a great bar. Great service. Great food and drinks. Very affordable. Now to ponder if they smashed a wall down and made it bigger. Would it hold the same charm? Hmmm...

This one will be short and sweet. Decided to make my way down here after a good 3 hours of studying at SD Central Library. This place is primarily designed as a bar, as there are only roughly 4-5 2-seater tables, a stage, and a ton of liquor. I ended up sitting at the bar, and I'm glad I did because Nick is an incredible bartender/host. The Balboa burger is huge and only $5 during happy hour. The buns added a nice crunch to the dish, and when Nick says to add avocado and bacon, you add avocado and bacon no questions asked. With the extremely low prices, great random banter with Nick and overall chill atmosphere (with exceptional music by the Strokes and Disney movies playing in the background), I don't see any reason not to come back for more. Be warned, though, that this place gets really crowded on Fri and Sat nights. Make your way here on a Sunday afternoon and nothing about this joint will disappoint. Oh and FYI, if you're missing Doodz flying cheeseburger, Nick says the centennial is the exact same burger. Thanks Nick for a wonderful experience here!

Love. In a bun. OMG. SO DAMN DELICIOUS. I'm not a big burger eater. I don't even really like in-n-out burgers. *gasp* I know...I'm a terrible San Diegan. I do like the burgers at Phil's BBQ though. These burgers that I tasted yesterday during my lunch break, at Balboa...put every burger that I have ever tasted to shame. Can't wait to bring the boyfriend with me so he can taste the deliciousness. Ordered the garlic fries. They were fresh, hot and garlicky and came with a side of sauce that I will also call "love". Lol don't know what it was, but GOD DAMN...DELICIOUS. Shout out to Nick, told you I'd give you a shout out. Excellent service. Friendly atmosphere. Come here...you won't be disappointed.

Local dive. My kinda place. Service is attentive. Burgers... Great! Try the Balboa with bacon & avocado. Awesome! Garlic fries are good as well. Don't be a prude. Check it out!

I have been here couple times. Once on a thursday evening, and then again this Sunday evening. Both times, the place has been semi-empty which has probably made me like this place even more! The two bartenders I have met have been very nice. The cocktails - every single one I've had has been great. The Hotel Nacional is particularly good. The first time, I ordered the balboa burger and added avocado and bacon. The burger was pretty good but not great. This last time, I ordered the balboa burger again, but I added an egg. That made the trick! It's was so good! Again, not best burger ever, but pretty up there :) tl;dr? Balboa burger + egg == great! Cocktails == amazing! Also, get garlic fries.

One of the best burgers I've ever had. We ordered two balboa's with bacon, one regular balboa, one classic, and a large fry.

The hotel national drink , garlic fries and Cali burger.($8.25) So GOOD! This place is a great spot! My girlfriend got a BBQ bacon burger. Also very very good. Very well balanced flavor and fair price. ($8.25)

Yes yes yes... Totally lives up to the hype! Burger was on point, I went with the double centennial and it was impressive and tasty. A perfect balance of flavor and the meat was fresh. I recommend this place to any burger lover. Not to mention the fries were just like i like them fresh cut... Rare in this day and age. A+++

Came here on the final day of Burger week after reading all my yelp friends great reviews of their burger and also discovering its right up the street from my yoga studio! Bonus! Guess this used to be the Tin Can, and the burger place Doods Foods. Its the same owners and I'm guessing the same menu with a different name and maybe a little remodel. I've read many good yelp reviews of Doods Foods burgers but i always saw that it was on 5th ave. and though that i didn't want to fight the parking situation downtown. But when i looked up the location its actually a few blocks north of downtown in Bankers Hill so you're not dealing with all that down town hassle. There were 3 beers on tap a modern times coffee stout, an IPA and a lighter selection (Golden Ale?) I got the Coffee stout, so smooth and delicious. There are also a few bottled beers too. Got the burger week special The Balboa Burger for $5, it was a very simple burger, lettuce, tomato, onion, american cheese, and zesty aioli. The aioli, although tasty and creamy wasn't zesty at all, but the burger was delicious! Very juicy and tender, the outside had a nice char to it while the inside was so soft and moist (cooked on a panini grill i think). The juiciest burger i can think of. I know I'm not in the majority when i tell people that i don't find anything special about the burger at Rocky's, in fact some people think I'm crazy. Rocky's is also a simple burger but the one here is much better and far juicer than the one at Rocky's and how a burger should be cooked. This is the burger that i envisioned when people talk about how how juicy the burger at Rocky's is. If you're a fan of Rocky's, i highly suggest you try this burger, then you can judge for yourself. I was really happy to discover this place, I really liked how this simple burger was so good, i can't wait to come back and try one of their more fancy burgers; Like the Pastrami burger or the California Burgito (a burger version of a California burrito) with fries, avocado and salsa inside. Another cool thing about them is that the prices are listed with the tax included.. so you actually pay $6 for a $6 beer, When you get your receipt, the beer is actually $5.56 + 44¢ tax i wish everyone else did this. I've been told on fridays an saturdays they have live music at around 9 or 10 usually rock bands which would be fun to check out too.

There are a few times in life when a meal is so expertly crafted and put together that you are stunned. The outward appearance had me timid at first but after sitting down, talking to the bar tender and ordering I was hooked. Food.... Out of this world amazing. Drinks..... Fantastic and the bartenders will make anything and learn any kind of drink that you want. Bring your friends, bring your family. This is the place to be.

  • Lilian C.

Their burgers are amazing! I am pretty picky about how buns are cooked on burgers, and they perfected it. Great place with a great round of drinks with friends. It's cozy and intimate, but definitely a great way to end the work week with great food and drinks.

This is an honest review. The Balboa B&G is a cool place that I would to hang out and enjoy. I like how cool the bar is and they appear to have live music. My colleagues and I would love to come here to hang out, listen to music and enjoy the atmosphere. Unfortunately and fortunately for the business owners, this place is consistently crowded because of the burgers it ruins it for us. We went in here one day for lunch to talk about work related stuff. The next thing we know, there is a line out the door, the place is packed solid, the bartender is doing his level best to serve customers and take orders that we were not able to get a second drink. Not to mention the customers with food circling our table like rude vultures interrupting our meeting every five minutes to ask us when we were leaving. We literally had a family of six people (they looked tourists) glaring at us and standing behind our table. Not an experience I want to have when I am trying to do team building with my colleagues and definitely not a place to socialize and relax. If you want to stand in line for an hour for a burger, "maybe" get a beer this is your place. I will come back in a couple years after the hype dies down. This place has tremendous potential to just be a cool little neighborhood bar to relax in and enjoy a beverage or two but not now. By the way, the employees on duty the couple of times we have come here are very, very nice and hard working. The burger is good but not something that I would stand in line for an hour for during lunch time. There are other places to go people.

This is the best burger I've had in a while!!! Fries, drinks, and customer service are also the best. It was empty when I walked in at about 4:30 PM but this place definitely did not disappoint. This is must if your looking for a burger and drinks in downtown San Diego!!!

Went for $5 Burger Week and the burger was legit. Juice/grease was dripping out of it--it was definitely NOT dry. My eating partner and I enjoyed it. Even when it's not burger week, I think it's only like $7 or so. This is a divey joint and the people seem friendly. We were there kinda late on a weeknight, so it wasn't that busy. But what sealed the deal of awesomeness is that they were playing one of our favorite ever comedies, Peep Show, on the TVs. So random!

Can I just copy and paste my review For doods foods ? I have been a huge fan of doods foods for a while now as my Girlfriend will tell you . When I first heard about the change I was a bit nervous as to what to expect but I was comforted by flavor of the fresh beef and zesty house aoli. I ordered the centennial burger which comes with two pattys and two slices of cheese on a bolilo bun with the house aoli . The centennial burger was cooked perfectly and paired along with fresh seasoned thick cut fries . Everything from the bolilo bun to the vegetables were extremely fresh . The service here at the newly minted Balboa bar and grill is always top notch and food and drinks come out quickly . The guys always have a smile on and are always attentive . I look forward to many more cheat meals here at the balboa . New name Same great food

Came here on accident while meeting someone for lunch and looking for what used to be the old establishment. Worked out well for us. Real well. The burgers are now very high on my list of best in town and while they may not sit on the throne they still command your attention. If you like a bare bones burger, you've got better choices in town. If you like a sloppy burger with so many toppings that it barely resembles a burger, you've got plenty of options in town. If you like a burger somewhere in the middle then this is your place. It's small and dark inside and the majority of seats are at the bar, all of which I love. If you live or work in the area you should be coming here at least weekly. I can see this falling into the category of burger joints where the line out the door becomes a compliment to the chefs and owners.

Burger: Dee-freakin-liscous Fries: just aight Garlic Fries: much better Spirits: No fuck!ng idea, I just had water Service: Pretty Good (no complaints) Ambiance: I don't f*cking know. It's a hole-in-the wall. Chill. Is chill an acceptable descriptive adjective for you? Vibe: (isn't that the same thing as "Ambiance") Chill. Conclusion: You should Fux with it! No really, how was the food: Ok. I went here strictly for a burger and fries. I had the BBQ Bacon Cheese Burger and the Balboa burger with Avocado added. On initial impression, I thought the burger patty was a little on the smaller side (they are all 1/3 pound patties), but it made up for it in taste. My burger was cooked to a perfect medium rare and had a great crust to it as well. I while eating my burger, I felt like it was a bit on the greasier side and did not like that. Then I thought about it for a bit and said to myself "oh yeah, you dumb bitch, burgers are sometimes greasy", so I continued eating happily. Well worth it. If you decide to get fries, don't bother with regular fries, get the garlic ones. They come out kinda soft (but still good) so if you like them super crispy you can ask them to make it more so. I have no idea if they will freakin do it, but hey, at least you tried. Sidenote: I want you to know that I love ketchup. ~M

Heard about this place and after reading about it I decided to see what it was about.. I wasn't expecting this place to be a rustic/ dive bar feel so I was a bit confused upon entering. The menu is pretty basic, but basic isn't always a bad thing. Balboa's is about BURGERS!! I ordered the Continental which is two patties, double bacon, coated with a flavorful aioli sauce on the buns. Them buns tho, Wow!! Soft like pillows in your mouth with a buttery glaze, mmmhmm. I decided to add avocado and a fried egg (fried egg on a burger gives it an insane taste OMG). This burger was massive and I seriously morphed into some wild beast as I ate and finished it (don't know how I did it). Please pair any burger with some garlic fries and I promise it's as good of pairing as Batman and Robin. This place is a must go, the Bartender is very friendly, and although the appearance isn't much inside and out, the food and service is all the reasons needed to swing by!

Tate is an awesome bartender the burgers are amazing you need to go now!!! Get the garlic fries for sure, their specialty drinks are all really good especially the balboa try it now you will not be disappointed

I have been frequenting the Balboa since the days of the Tin Can. What Tom and crew have all done to bring the place up another notch is spectacular. It's my go-to local joint for a bite to eat and a beer. Everyone who visits asks me to take them by for one of the famous burgers that I'm always sending them pictures of. The new cocktail list is well put together and has something for all palates. I personally love the Cucumber Smash. Very refreshing and tons of fresh cucumber flavor. When it comes to burgers, everything is good. Fries? Epic. Go for the garlic fries.

Seriously impressed with this little gem! It has a hole in the wall kind of feel to it, but not in a bad way. It has seating for approx 20 and a cool old school jukebox. They have a good selection of local beers and the burgers are excellent. They were cooked really, really well- seriously cannot fault anything that came out of the kitchen. Excellent value for money and definitely made it onto my best burgers in San Diego list!

I got a couple of bacon avocado cheeseburgers plus fries and garlic fries from The Balboa today for lunch with my friend. So good! Burgers were a perfect medium and the fries with homemade Ranch were just awesome. The look of the place is much classier than its earlier incarnation and the food has just gotten better. I see more lunches in our future!

This place is a bit small but has great food and good service. The pastrami burger is excellent, personally i like to add a fried egg which can get a little messy. The garlic fries have pieces of garlic and are very tasty, but also potent. You will definitely need gum after. If you're not there during happy hour it can get pricey. I spent $21 on a burger, small fry, and beer... before the tip. The food is definitely worth it. The centennial burger is a monster and great for big appetites. Only street parking and its metered so bring quarters.

I just couldn't imagine this place getting a bad review. The are tucked away in a almost hidden hole in the wall type place. And aren't those always the best? The burgers are so juicy and full of flavor, the chicken sandwich is very messy but again full of flavor. The fried are fresh. The bartender we had (sorry don't know his name) was very personable. Tended to everyone coming in yet still had a conversation with us.

Balboa burger is real good!!! Pastrami burger and garlic fries are delicious as well. 8$ burgers, 6$ beers. Small dark bar with a juke box. Bring dollar bills for music or it'll be awkwardly silent.

Checked this place out last weekend and I will definitely be back. My boyfriend and I ordered a few different drinks from their craft cocktails menu and they were all delicious. We also ordered some food and no complaints there either. The place was pretty empty as it was a Sunday but we chatted with the bartenders who were both friendly and provided great service. I heard they have bands on the weekends so I plan on going back on one of those nights. If you like dark dives that also have quality drinks and good bar food, check this place out!

This place is a hole in the wall that makes a great burger. Decided to try this place for burger week. You can get the Balboa burger for only $5. I went for the cenntinial burger which was $10. Double patty, double cheese, double bacon with aioli sauce. The bacon was thick cut and the patty was cooked to perfection. If you have an appetite go with the cenntinial. I will definitely be back for drinks and of course their burger.

Nick served it up right. When you walk in you wouldn't expect to find such a great meal! The food in this place is outstanding. In fact, next time we go my buddy said he'll finish three Flying Cheeseburgers with fries to begin a challenge. Definitely coming back

Pleasant surprise! We didn't know what to expect from the windowless exterior, but when we entered we were met with a friendly neighborhood vibe and classy drinks. We ordered burgers- I had the Balboa with bacon and avocado added and my husband had one with jalapeños added. Both were huge and delicious. We could see into the kitchen from the bar and it was clear the cook put together the burgers with care and almost an artistic touch! The bartender (Nick) was very good at his job- welcoming, entertaining, and made delicious drinks. Cocktails here are hand crafted with fresh squeezed lemon and lime juice, toasted orange peel included in some drinks. They also have live music which can be too loud, but on a Saturday night 9-10:30 it was a pleasant vibe with a juke box and Hot Fuzz playing in the background. Definitely recommend for burgers, a beer, or a classy drink!

Hands-down one of my favorite dive(ish) bars in San Diego. Great atmosphere, awesome burgers, strong drinks and amazing staff. What more could you want in a bar? The bartenders Nick & Odie are two awesome dudes. Professional and friendly! Get the Mexican Gimlet and the garlic fries, seriously.

This place is amazing! Hadn't been here since it was still called the Tin Can. So glad to see the food still tastes the same. Best burger you can get in San Diego (that I know of). Not that big of a beer selection, but they have a ton of whiskey so yay!

  • Stacy S.

Popped in here for the first time, nice little spot! The burgers were great, the meat was good and the fries were tasty. The bread was super thick which threw off the meat to bun ratio, it should always be more meat--but that's me. Loved the pickles, they tasted like they make them in-house, yum! The bar is a little dive-y which is what I love about it. Service from the kitchen was great, I noticed the cook flipped all the burgers, ran food and bussed! The FOH (front of the house) service was okay, took awhile to order drinks. Will definitely be back! There is a tiny stage there, great venue for live music or comedy!

Love that kind of bar. Easy go, very nice service and waiter and drink a nice local IPA. The burger was good, I won't say the best of the world as some say below. But definitely correct. Price is also soft. A nice bar, a bit remote but worth to know and go if you re around

Bill A. Came here because of the new YELP promo and 5 star rating. Way understaffed.. two burgers took 45 mins kitchen confused and glacier speed. Poor service took all the glow off a good but not great burger. At 1:15 in the afternoon expected better.

I wish I could have shared our lunch photos showing how delicious our lunch looked but my phone didn't have " enough memory" (I phone problems!) :) anyways, awesome food and awesome service! I got aBBQ bacon burger which they didn't hold back on the BBQ and bacon! We got the garlic fries which were great as well they were seasoned with Cajun. Beer was nice and cold and the jute box has great selection of music! We will definitely be back!

Believe the hype. The. Best. Burger. You will take one bite of the balboa burger with avocado and forsake all other burgers. This is now the burger measuring stick I compare all other burgers to. I almost hate Balboa Bar and Grill because I can no longer enjoy other burgers--every time I eat one I think, "It's alright, but it's no Balboa Burger." The price is unbeatable too. Unbelievable.

Came here for the opening of this bar and I was not at all impressed. The bouncer kept about 10 people waiting outside for over 40 minutes saying that the bar was "above capacity." Even the bands playing (who had friends in the line missing their gig) came out before to see why the bouncer wasn't letting people in. When the bouncer finally let people in, we saw the bar was 1/2 empty and it was just a ploy to look like there was a line outside and the place was popular. Hate these kind of tactics by bar owners- so desperate. The sound is pretty crappy too for the bands we were there to see. The place is super tiny and in a weird dark alley- that I really wouldn't call Banker's Hill. Yeah, I won't be back. Sorry to be so harsh. ):

This place was the bomb! Best burger I've had in a long time. The atmosphere is like a little hole in the wall place. Best part besides the food was the quick service and until 8pm anyone of any age can partake in delicious burgers. I dined with my 14 year old friend who felt super cool that she was eating a burger in a bar!

This place always works out great for me. Is a weekly stop for me as their burgers are top notch, and always put me in a better mood before I start my night work shift. I've never stopped in here after 7pm, so not sure what the night crowd is like. But I do know that their kitchen is open till 12am. The burgers are always cooked as ordered, and you can tell everything is fresh. Don't skip out on their aioli. It's the icing on the cake for the deliciousness that is their burgers. The only thing that I will say bad about it, is that this place is small. The only reason that I find that partially annoying is that if you get one loud group of 5 people in there, you will know it. Little sound absorption so the noise of a loud group will completely fill up the place. I'd dock a 1/2 star for that if I could. And yes, the burgers are that good that I will round up, not down. That being said, I will continue to consistently go there for the burgers, but won't be making it a night time hangout. Keep those burgers coming and you got a customer for life!

Stopped in here last Sunday from the airport after reading about it on thrillist. Great spot with superior char grilled burgers and superb craft cocktails. Had a last word made with rye that was exceptional. Nick provided great service and cocktailation. Reasonable pricing and chill atmosphere as well. Easy street meter parking.

This place always hits the spot. Great-tasting, fresh burgers and good selection of beer. Very chill atmosphere. On the outskirts of downtown so the good thing is that it is not usually full of people. I've been coming here since it was Dood's Food and the Tin Can. I enjoy coming here and will continue to come here.

Burgers

Burger or Hamburger is savored as the most desired fast food meal in the United States. A hamburger is basically a sandwich prepared by stuffing ground meat patty, generally beef, between two slices of a bun cut in half. Hamburger is also famous for its seasoning.
